LegalPath

FAQ

Every question,
the honest answer.

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. If yours isn't here, email hello@legalpath.ca — we'll add it.

Is this actually legal?

Are LegalPath forms valid in court?

Yes — every form is built around the actual provincial and federal Acts (Wills and Succession Act, Divorce Act, Residential Tenancies Act, etc.) and reviewed for compliance. The PDF you download is the same document a lawyer would prepare.

Are you a law firm?

No. LegalPath is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We provide legal information and self-help forms. For complex or contested matters, you should consult a qualified lawyer in your province.

Do I need a lawyer to sign these forms?

No. The whole point of LegalPath is that you don't. That said, complex matters — contested divorces, large estates, custody disputes, business mergers — benefit from a lawyer's review.

What if I make a mistake on a form?

You can revise any in-progress form before downloading. If you find an error after downloading, you can re-generate the PDF for free for 90 days. Subscribers can re-generate forever.

How LegalPath compares

How is this different from LegalZoom?

LegalZoom is American. We are 100% Canadian, by Canadian founders, built around Canadian law in Canadian provinces — including bilingual Québec forms. We are also dramatically cheaper, with no hidden upsells.

How is this different from a free template I found online?

Free templates are usually outdated, US-based, or generic. LegalPath forms are tied to current provincial legislation, refreshed when laws change, and walked through with a wizard so you don't miss critical clauses.

How is this different from hiring a paralegal?

A paralegal in Canada typically charges $150-$300/hour. LegalPath replaces paralegal-level form preparation at a fraction of the cost. For matters that need a paralegal's legal advice (e.g., small claims representation in Ontario), we can't replace them — we recommend the Law Society of Ontario's referral service.

What we cover

Which provinces are live?

Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Québec (en français), Manitoba, plus federal forms (Canadian incorporation, name changes for federal employees, etc.). Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick rolling out monthly.

Which forms are available?

Are forms available in French?

Québec forms are fully bilingual. We are working on full French translations for Ontario and federal forms — expected end of 2026.

Do you handle court filings?

No. LegalPath produces signed-ready PDFs. You file them yourself with the appropriate court or registry. Every form includes a Filing Instructions page with the exact court name, fee, and method for your province.

Privacy & security

Where is my data stored?

On Canadian servers (Supabase ca-central-1, in Montréal). Subject to PIPEDA and Québec's Law 25.

Can LegalPath staff see my forms?

No. Forms are encrypted at rest and only accessible by you. Premium's "paralegal review" service involves a screen-share session you control.

How long do you keep my data?

In-progress drafts: as long as you have an account. Completed forms: 7 years (Canadian record-keeping standard) or until you delete them.

AI assistant

What does the AI assistant do?

It explains legal terms in plain English, walks you through tricky questions, and points you to the relevant legislation section. It does not give legal advice — it gives legal information.

Can I trust the AI?

For information lookup, yes. For decision-making on complex matters (custody, estate planning over $500K, contested divorce), the AI will tell you to consult a lawyer. We are conservative on purpose.

How many AI questions do I get?

3 free questions per form. Subscribers get unlimited.

Still have questions?

Real humans, Canadian time zones. Average reply: 3 hours.
